Know About Kidney Stone – Types, Symptoms & Treatment

Kidney Stone - What is it?

A kidney stone is a hard item that is formed from urine chemicals. Calcium oxalate, uric acid, struvite, and cystine are the four forms of kidney stones.

Various wastes are dissolved in urine. Crystals arise when there is too much waste in too little liquid. The crystals attract other elements and combine to form a solid that will grow in size unless it is excreted in the urine. The kidney, the body's master chemist, usually eliminates these compounds in the urine. Having enough liquid washes them out in most people, or other compounds in urine prevent a stone from developing. Calcium, oxalate, urate, cystine, xanthine, and phosphate are stone-forming compounds.

The stone may remain in the kidney or migrate down the urinary path into the ureter once it has formed. Tiny stones can pass through the body and exit through the urine without causing too much discomfort. However, if the stones don't move, they can create a back-up of urine in the kidney, ureter, bladder, or urethra. This is the source of the discomfort.
